The bad news keeps piling up for the Toronto Blue Jays in an already disappointing season. The team has now received concerning injury updates about one of its key players.
Manager John Schneider confirmed that closer Jordan Romano has been shut down for the remainder of the season after making only 15 appearances due to elbow inflammation that put him on the injured list in May. Romano had been working in Florida in an attempt to return, but as Sportsnet’s Arden Zwelling noted, he “ran out of time.”
Schneider detailed Romano’s rehab plan to ensure he’s ready for Spring Training in 2025, adding that Romano will likely avoid Winter Leagues, with his first game-like action expected when pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training in February.
This setback is a tough blow for the Blue Jays, but with the team sitting at the bottom of the AL East, it’s a sensible move to prioritize Romano’s long-term health rather than rush him back. Romano has been a top closer in recent years, earning All-Star honors in 2021 and 2022 with a sub-three ERA across three full seasons. As the Blue Jays look to rebuild and potentially extend key players like Vladimir Guerrero Jr., having Romano back at full strength will be crucial to their postseason ambitions next year.
