The Tennessee Titans have decided to part ways with linebacker Luke Gifford, the team announced on Tuesday. Gifford, who joined the Titans last offseason after spending four seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, is being waived following a single season in Tennessee.
During his time with the Titans, the Nebraska alum appeared in 11 games. His primary role was on special teams, where he contributed six tackles. Gifford also saw minimal action on defense, playing just eight snaps, while he was on the field for 259 special teams plays. He struggled with a concussion during the preseason, which impacted his performance and opportunities.
Before his tenure with the Titans, Gifford had a limited role with the Cowboys, logging only 14 defensive snaps in his first two seasons. However, his involvement increased significantly in his third and fourth seasons, where he appeared in 16 games each year.
The timing of Gifford’s release comes just days before the Titans’ season opener against the Chicago Bears. The Titans’ linebacker corps is notably deep this season, leaving limited opportunities for Gifford to secure a position on the roster.
On the other hand, the Cowboys’ linebacker situation has strengthened since last season. They are set to introduce new faces such as Marist Liufau and DeMarvion Overshown, while Damone Clark returns and veteran Eric Kendricks joins the squad. The Cowboys will kick off their regular season against the Cleveland Browns this Sunday at 3:25 PM ET on FOX.
