After failing to finalize a new contract, former Boston Bruins goaltending prospect Reid Dyck has signed with the Utah Hockey Club.
Once considered a top goaltending prospect in the 2022 draft class, Dyck was selected by the Bruins at 183rd overall. Standing 6’4″ and just 20 years old, Dyck excelled as the starting goalie for the Swift Current Broncos last season. Despite his potential and the Bruins’ uncertain goalie situation, the team did not offer him a contract.
This decision is particularly puzzling given that the Bruins recently traded Vezina Trophy winner Linus Ullmark to the Ottawa Senators, leaving them with the untested Brandon Bussi as their third-string goalie. With Jeremy Swayman still without a contract extension, releasing Dyck seems risky.
Meanwhile, Dyck is now participating in training camp with the Utah Hockey Club, formerly the Arizona Coyotes. The Coyotes relocated to Salt Lake City under new owner Ryan Smith and the Smith Entertainment Group.
The Bruins appear to be prioritizing Michael DiPietro over Dyck, a move that could backfire. Dyck had a standout season with the Swift Current Broncos, posting a 25-7-2 record with a 2.70 GAA and a .911 save percentage in 35 games.
