Could Jonathan Kuminga’s time with the Warriors be coming to an end?
ESPN’s Brian Windhorst suggests there’s a “high probability” that the fourth-year forward could be traded if the Warriors don’t extend his contract by the October 2024 deadline for rookie-scale extensions.
“Kuminga is a key player to watch. He’s currently in the middle of contract extension talks,” Windhorst said on the August 30 episode of ESPN’s “First Take.” “If they extend him, a trade becomes less likely. But if the October deadline passes without a deal, the chances of him being traded during the season increase significantly.”
Kuminga’s future was a hot topic on “First Take” as the crew discussed the Warriors’ unsuccessful attempts to acquire All-Stars Paul George or Lauri Markkanen during the 2024 offseason. Windhorst noted that the Warriors hesitated to include Kuminga or Brandin Podziemski in trade offers.
Impact of Steph Curry’s Extension
The Warriors are under pressure to bolster their roster after extending Stephen Curry’s contract in August 2024, keeping him in the Bay Area through the 2026-27 season. This extension effectively pushed the Warriors to improve their lineup, especially after missing the playoffs last year. The Warriors are projected to win just 43.5 games in the 2024-25 season, which could lead to another postseason absence.
Curry, at 36, showcased his enduring athleticism during the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he played a key role in Team USA’s gold medal win. His performance prompted analysts to urge Golden State to build a more competitive roster for the upcoming season.
Warriors GM Mike Dunleavy acknowledged the urgency, stating, “We need to capitalize on Steph’s prime. We’re serious about winning, and our decisions reflect that.”
Will the Warriors Trade Kuminga?
Kuminga had a breakout season, averaging 16.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.2 assists while shooting 53% from the field. Many believed he had secured his future with the Warriors. However, some speculate that Kuminga might not reach his full potential soon, leading to a possible trade while his value is high. Rebuilding teams could be eager to acquire him, especially if they can make him a primary scoring option.
Despite the trade rumors, the Warriors remain confident in Kuminga’s potential for the 2024-25 season.
“Year 3 or Year 4 is typically when players make a big leap, and we’re hoping to see that from Jonathan,” Dunleavy said in July. “He’s worked hard, especially this summer, and we believe this could be the year he takes a huge step forward.”
