Breaking News: Guardians Reunite with 34-Year-Old Top Prospect in Postseason Push

The Cleveland Guardians have re-signed left-handed pitcher Anthony Gose to a minor league contract, according to his player profile on MLB.com. The deal was finalized on August 31, making Gose eligible to pitch for Cleveland in the postseason if the team adds him back to their 40-man roster.

Gose, 34, originally entered the professional baseball scene as a second-round pick by the Phillies in the 2008 draft. Initially regarded as a top-100 prospect as a hitter, his transition to the major leagues didn’t yield the offensive results expected. Over five seasons in the majors, Gose posted a .240/.309/.348 batting line before deciding to switch to pitching. His comeback as a reliever began with Cleveland in 2021, where he made an impressive return, striking out 37.5% of batters and posting a 1.35 ERA in six appearances.

Since then, Gose has made 24 additional appearances for the Guardians, with the bulk of his innings coming in 2022. During that time, he recorded a 4.71 ERA over 21 innings, with a 30.4% strikeout rate but also struggled with control, walking 15.2% of batters and allowing four home runs. His comeback was further complicated by Tommy John surgery in September 2022, which sidelined him for the entire 2023 season.

In 2024, Gose made his return, delivering strong performances at the Triple-A level with a 3.46 ERA and a 32.9% strikeout rate over 39 innings. However, his brief appearances with Cleveland this year didn’t go as well, allowing three runs on six hits and a walk in just 3 1/3 innings. As a result, Gose was designated for assignment last week. Although he initially opted for free agency, he quickly re-signed with the Guardians on a new minor league deal.

This contract not only keeps Gose as a potential depth option for the Guardians’ bullpen but also leaves the possibility open for him to make the postseason roster if he can show improvements at the major league level in the remaining regular season games.
