The Orioles‘ string of bad luck continues as Ramón Urías is the latest player to land on the injured list. Urías rolled his ankle while trying to field a throw during a stolen base attempt in Saturday’s game against the Rockies, leading to his IL placement the following day.
This roster change coincides with September’s roster expansion, allowing teams to add one position player and one pitcher. Here’s the full list of the Orioles’ moves from Sunday afternoon:
– Urías placed on the 10-day injured list (right ankle sprain)
– Zach Eflin was activated from the 15-day injured list (right shoulder inflammation)
– Coby Mayo recalled from Triple-A Norfolk
– David Bañuelos’ contract selected from Norfolk
– Forrest Wall (currently with Norfolk) designated for assignment
Urías was one of the few Orioles who hit well in July and August, making his absence a tough blow for a lineup struggling to find consistency.
Eflin’s return was anticipated, as his shoulder inflammation wasn’t considered severe. He even indicated he’d return without a rehab assignment, and true to his word, he’s back on the first day he was eligible. Eflin had performed well in his first four starts after joining the Orioles, and the team will be hoping for more of that success.
Mayo’s return was also expected, with reports circulating the day before. It was surprising to see him recalled so soon, considering he was sent to the minors to work on some issues, which may not have been fully addressed yet. This move could indicate either the Orioles’ optimism or a sense of urgency.
Bañuelos, a catcher, has had two brief stints with the Orioles this season, during which he got his first and only big league at-bat. He may get more chances this time, or he could be up temporarily until the Orioles bring in someone else. After watching Adley Rutschman lately, giving the third catcher some opportunities while resting Rutschman doesn’t seem like a bad idea, though it’s a painful thought to consider.
Wall was claimed off waivers on August 28, and the Orioles might hope he passes through waivers again, or they may not be too concerned about losing him.
