PHOENIX — Two former fan favorites of the Phoenix Suns have returned to the Valley of the Sun this summer.
Cam Johnson and Cam Payne were spotted playing golf in Phoenix, with Johnson having been seen on the course last week as well.
Johnson and Payne shared approximately 2 1/2 seasons with the Suns, both playing crucial roles in the team’s 2021 NBA Finals run.
Johnson has been the subject of trade rumors recently, with the Los Angeles Lakers often mentioned as a potential landing spot. If a trade happens, Suns fans might see more of him soon.
Payne, who was traded to the San Antonio Spurs last offseason before being released, later signed with the Milwaukee Bucks and was eventually moved to the Philadelphia 76ers.
Johnson experienced a challenging first full season in Brooklyn, dealing with injuries and coaching changes. However, it’s unlikely that either player will return to the Suns, as Johnson is entering the second year of a four-year contract with the Brooklyn Nets, and Payne has reunited with Mikal Bridges by signing with the New York Knicks this offseason.
The presence of these former Suns players in Phoenix reflects the strong ties and appreciation they still have for the community and the team, despite no longer being part of the franchise. This loyalty is a positive sign for Suns owner Mat Ishbia, indicating that the culture he has fostered is far stronger than that of the previous regime.
Payne and Johnson are set to return to Phoenix during the upcoming season, with visits scheduled for November 20 and 27, respectively.
