With the Houston Texans finalizing their 53-player roster for the regular season, they are now focusing on setting up their practice squad for 2024.
On Thursday, the Texans added quarterback Kedon Slovis, who was previously with the Indianapolis Colts, to their practice squad. After being waived on Sunday, the former BYU standout has found a new opportunity in Houston.
Slovis, who initially played for USC before transferring to Pitt and concluding his college career at BYU, amassed 11,689 passing yards and 80 touchdowns over his five-year tenure in college football. He joined the Colts as an undrafted free agent and had a solid preseason performance, completing 16 of 22 passes for 149 yards.
The addition of Slovis is notable for the Texans, as their current backup quarterbacks, Davis Mills and Case Keenum, have contracts that will expire after this season. This opens the door for Slovis, 23, to potentially step into a backup role in the future. Despite a season-ending injury last year that limited him to eight games, Slovis had a strong showing with 1,716 yards and 15 touchdowns.
It will be intriguing to see how the quarterback situation unfolds, with Slovis possibly emerging as the team’s third-string quarterback and a potential long-term backup.
