The Indianapolis Colts announced on Thursday that they have re-signed placekicker Spencer Shrader to the practice squad.
Despite the starting kicker position being secure with Matt Gay, Shrader took full advantage of his training camp and preseason opportunity with the Colts. The former undrafted Notre Dame standout went 2 for 2 in preseason Week 3 against the Cincinnati Bengals, including nailing a 56-yard field goal on the road, and made all 4 of his extra-point attempts. He also performed consistently well throughout training camp.

The Colts have a history of kickers who performed well in the preseason but didn’t make the final roster, only to find success elsewhere in the NFL, such as Michael Badgley, Chase McLaughlin, Cody Parkey, and Eddy Pineiro.
For now, Shrader remains with the Colts, and while he’s not on the active roster, he could become a reliable option should an unexpected injury arise—either for the Colts or another NFL team.
