The San Antonio Spurs have completed their roster for the offseason and are unlikely to bring in any additional free agents before the NBA season begins. This summer, the Spurs bolstered their playmaking by drafting Stephon Castle and signing Chris Paul, while they enhanced their shooting by trading for Harrison Barnes and drafting Harrison Ingram. However, these moves led to the departure of some players, including sharpshooting forward Cedi Osman, who was not re-signed and is still without a new team. Former Spur Doug McDermott, traded to the Indiana Pacers in February, is also without a contract.
Last season, despite ranking 11th in three-point attempts, the Spurs struggled with their shooting accuracy, finishing 27th in the league with a 34.7 percent success rate. McDermott (43.9 percent) and Osman (38.9 percent) were among the team’s more reliable shooters, but neither will be returning.
As high-profile role players like Isaiah Hartenstein, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and Tobias Harris secured substantial contracts, players like Tyus Jones and Gary Trent Jr. had to settle for less. As the season approaches and team budgets tighten, Osman and McDermott may face similar circumstances. Nevertheless, opportunities remain with teams still in need of shooters. The Phoenix Suns, having waived Nassir Little and EJ Liddell, might consider adding one of them, and the Sacramento Kings are seeking floor spacers to complement their new lineup of DeMar DeRozan, De’Aaron Fox, and Domantas Sabonis.
While neither Osman nor McDermott are known for their defense, they are valuable bench players known for their offensive contributions and efficient shooting, making it unlikely that last season was their final appearance in the NBA.
