On cutdown day, the New York Jets made significant adjustments to their quarterback situation.
NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported on August 27 that the Jets released quarterbacks Adrian Martinez and Andrew Peasley. Consequently, the team’s initial 53-man roster now includes just Aaron Rodgers and Tyrod Taylor as their quarterbacks.
The Jets had an open competition for the third quarterback spot, with Martinez and Peasley vying for the role. While both had some strong moments during the preseason, particularly in the first game against the Washington Commanders, their performance declined in subsequent games. Neither player managed to secure the position, leading to their release.
Currently, the Jets are left with only two quarterbacks on their roster. However, recent rule changes could prompt them to add another quarterback before the 2024 season opener. The NFLPA recently vetoed a revised Emergency Third Quarterback rule that would have allowed teams to elevate a quarterback from the practice squad an unlimited number of times. As a result, the rule has reverted to requiring the emergency third quarterback to be on the 53-man roster.
This development might push the Jets to add another quarterback for added security. Last season, due to injuries and ineffective play, the Jets had to use four different quarterbacks. To avoid similar issues, General Manager Joe Douglas may consider adding a backup quarterback to ensure the team is prepared for any eventuality.

In addition, rookie Jordan Travis, selected in the fifth round out of Florida State, will remain on the Non-Football Injury (NFI) list and miss at least the first four games of the season. Head coach Robert Saleh noted that Travis’ recovery from a severe leg injury is taking longer than expected, so his debut will likely be delayed further. The plan was always for Travis to develop behind veterans Rodgers and Taylor, and his absence confirms that he will be sidelined for a significant portion of the season.
