Although Alabama may not need its full roster of playmakers against Western Kentucky, the team is expected to be nearly at full strength for week one. Head coach Kalen DeBoer shared the positive update during his press conference on Monday. Junior running back Jam Miller and redshirt junior right guard Jaeden Roberts, who were dealing with injuries in fall camp, are both expected to be ready.
Miller is poised for a breakout season alongside sophomore Justice Haynes in Alabama’s backfield. Even if needed, Alabama has the luxury of easing Miller’s workload early in the season due to the emergence of redshirt freshman Richard Young, giving the Tide strong depth at running back.
Jaeden Roberts, who underwent a minor surgical procedure for a hand injury during camp, is also set to play. As a crucial part of what could be a dominant offensive line in 2024, Roberts’ return is good news for Alabama.
The only injury concern is redshirt sophomore linebacker Jeremiah Alexander, who remains questionable. DeBoer noted that while Alexander’s status is still being evaluated, his return “will be close,” leaving his availability uncertain for week one. Alexander, a backup linebacker behind Deontae Lawson, Jihaad Campbell, and Justin Jefferson, provides valuable depth and special teams contributions.
In Alexander’s potential absence, true freshman Justin Okoronkwo, who has impressed coaches this offseason, could step up and gain early-season reps.
Sophomore wide receiver Jalen Hale remains sidelined indefinitely with a knee injury. While his absence is notable, it has been anticipated since the spring and shouldn’t significantly impact the Tide’s offense.
With the 2024 season just days away, Alabama heads into week one with a largely healthy roster, positioning them well for the challenges ahead.
