The Bears have trimmed their quarterback roster to just two, making minimal changes before Tuesday’s NFL cut deadline. The most notable roster decision was keeping receiver-turned-running back Velus Jones on the 53-man roster.
The team released quarterbacks Brett Rypien and Austin Reed despite their impressive performances in training camp. Rypien posted a 131.4 passer rating, while Reed had a 117.4 rating. However, the Bears decided to retain only Caleb Williams as the starter and Tyson Bagent as the backup.
The NFLPA’s rejection of a proposed change to the emergency quarterback rule might have influenced this decision. Under the current rule, only quarterbacks on the 53-man roster can serve as the third emergency quarterback on game days.
Both Rypien and Reed could potentially return to the practice squad if they clear waivers. Rypien is exempt from waivers, but Reed must go through the process. They gained some fame as key figures in the Bears’ “Hard Knocks” series, with Reed impressing teammates with a performance during a team meeting.
The Bears were satisfied with their quarterback lineup, believing that Ryan Griffin, a veteran with a Super Bowl ring, can provide mentorship as an offensive assistant. Griffin’s experience with the Buccaneers as recently as 2022 supports the team’s confidence in their current quarterback situation.
Velus Jones, who was recently shifted from receiver to running back, showcased potential during the final preseason game with 111 yards and a touchdown. While his primary contribution is expected to be on special teams, the Bears hope he will also make an impact on offense to justify his roster spot.
General manager Ryan Poles, who bolstered the defensive line with recent trades, did not make major moves before the deadline. Although fans expressed interest in high-profile trades, such as acquiring Cowboys star Micah Parsons, Poles did not act on these suggestions.
The Bears also made several cuts, releasing players such as LB Micah Baskerville, TE Brenden Bates, and OL Theo Benedet, among others. They placed long snapper Patrick Scales on injured reserve due to a back issue and waived receiver Dante Pettis with an injury designation. Tackle Larry Borom and defensive lineman Jacob Martin were also placed on injured reserve but with a designation to return.
The final roster is subject to change as teams have the opportunity to claim players off waivers starting Wednesday. The Bears hold the ninth choice in the waiver process.
