Fans Reacts as Mavericks Lose Key Starter to the Clippers

Derrick Jones Jr.’s impact on the Dallas Mavericks was not widely anticipated when he was signed to a minimum contract last offseason. Although he had been sidelined at times in Chicago, Jones saw an opportunity to prove his worth alongside Luka Dončić.

Coach Jason Kidd didn’t guarantee him playing time, but Jones made a strong impression with his athleticism. He excelled in guarding top perimeter players, showcased remarkable dunking skills, and achieved a career-high in three-point shooting. His performance, especially with the support of Dončić and Kyrie Irving, led to him securing a 3-year, $30 million contract with the LA Clippers this offseason.

I Always Fight'; Dallas Mavericks Starter Derrick Jones Jr. Continues to Impress

The Mavericks will feel Jones’ absence, but his impact has been overstated by fans. Jones’ primary role was as a defender, but despite his efforts, the Mavericks’ defense was subpar before the trade deadline, ranking 22nd in the league. Following the acquisition of P.J. Washington and Daniel Gafford, the team’s defense dramatically improved, placing second in the league, thanks to the added toughness and physicality these players brought.

Jones contributed significantly to the team’s defensive identity, but even so, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander managed to score 32.2 points per game against the Mavericks in the playoffs. The team’s defensive schemes, which emphasize strong rim protection and effective perimeter defense, were better supported by Gafford and Dereck Lively II, while Washington’s addition further solidified the defense.

Jones was also known for his exciting lob finishes, though he averaged less than one dunk per game, a statistic that doesn’t significantly influence outcomes. The Mavericks’ replacement for Jones, Naji Marshall, is expected to be a good fit due to his superior shooting skills, addressing Jones’ inconsistency from beyond the arc, which was evident in the Finals. Marshall’s addition is seen as a boost, especially with the Mavericks also bringing in Klay Thompson to strengthen their lineup.
