According to NBA insider Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report, the New York Knicks attempted to trade for Utah Jazz center Walker Kessler.
The Jazz are reportedly open to moving Kessler.
“Utah has previously discussed trading Kessler, including a stalled negotiation with the New York Knicks,” Pincus wrote. “He doesn’t appear part of the team’s long-term vision.”
Last season, Kessler averaged 8.1 points, 7.5 rebounds, 0.9 assists, 0.5 steals, and 2.4 blocks per game for the Jazz while shooting 65.4% from the field, 21.1% from three, and 60.2% from the free-throw line. He’s set to earn $2.9 million next season.
Kessler’s career averages are 8.7 points, 8.0 rebounds, 0.9 assists, 0.4 steals, and 2.4 blocks per game. He was named to the 2022-23 All-Rookie First Team.
The Knicks require a big man after losing Isaiah Hartenstein to the Oklahoma City Thunder in free agency.
New York has already made one significant trade this offseason, acquiring Mikal Bridges from the Brooklyn Nets.
The Indiana Pacers eliminated the Knicks in a seven-game series in the second round of the 2024 playoffs. Jalen Brunson signed a four-year, $156 million extension this offseason, and OG Anunoby re-signed with New York.
Brunson opted to sign the extension now, leaving over $113 million on the table by not waiting until next offseason.
“I carefully considered my decision and am fully comfortable with it,” Brunson told reporters via ESPN. “Financially, my family and I are well off, but winning is what drives me. I want to win here.”
Brunson, who will earn $24.9 million next season, averaged 28.7 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 6.7 assists in 2023-24 while shooting 47.9% from the field, 40.1% from three, and 84.7% from the free-throw line.
“People can talk about wanting to win, but it’s all about their actions,” Brunson added. “This isn’t a guarantee of a championship, but it’s my way of contributing to the team’s journey. I’m excited to be part of it.”
