P.J. Fleck’s offseason moves in the transfer portal were extensive, addressing both immediate needs and future potential for the Gophers football team. The most notable addition was quarterback Max Brosmer from New Hampshire, who will be central to the offense. However, the improvements to the running back position are also crucial.
Fleck brought in three transfer running backs: Marcus Major from Oklahoma, Sieh Bangura from Ohio University, and Jaren Mangham from Michigan State. This infusion of talent adds both depth and experience to a position with several openings, and their impact could be seen as early as the season opener on August 29 against North Carolina at Huntington Bank Stadium.
Darius Taylor, who led the Gophers with 799 rushing yards in just six games as a freshman last year, left practice on August 13 with what seemed to be a hamstring injury. Fleck mentioned on Monday that Taylor “is doing great,” but did not provide further details, stating that an availability report will be issued a few hours before the game.
Fleck noted that he recruited many players to prepare for such situations, given past seasons were plagued by injuries to the running backs. He also remarked that, aside from minor injuries, the team is in good health and has performed well during training camp.
If Taylor is unavailable for the opener, Major is likely to step up. The 6-foot, 220-pound Major amassed 833 yards and eight touchdowns in his career at Oklahoma and showed promise during the portions of training camp open to media. Fleck compared him to former Gopher Mohamed Ibrahim, noting Major’s ability to run effectively between the tackles, his speed, and his skill at reading blocks, which he considers vital for a running back.
