The Phoenix Suns find themselves in an unusual situation. Since new owner Mat Ishbia took charge, he has made bold moves both in the roster and coaching staff, but the first full season under his leadership didn’t go as expected. Despite having three NBA superstars—Devin Booker, Kevin Durant, and Bradley Beal—the Suns only secured the 6th seed.
Their challenges persisted in the playoffs, where they were swept in the First Round. As the next season approaches, the team remains largely unchanged, with the exception of the underrated addition of Tyus Jones. During the offseason, Ishbia emphasized that the Suns would give their core group another chance.
However, if the upcoming season starts poorly, changes may be necessary. While many speculate that a trade involving Durant could be on the horizon, an alternative option might be trading their newest star instead while keeping the Durant-Booker duo intact.
### Why Bradley Beal Could Fit with the San Antonio Spurs
The Spurs are in a favorable position to take risks next season. As their young star Victor Wembanyama continues to develop, San Antonio can focus on slowly building a team around him. Wembanyama’s growth is crucial to their long-term success, and they’ve shown their commitment by adding veteran Chris Paul, a former MVP candidate.
Paul’s ability to run an offense with precision, combined with his leadership, could greatly benefit Wembanyama. His experience could also help develop this year’s lottery pick, Stephon Castle. But why stop there?
Bringing in Bradley Beal could further support Wembanyama’s development. Just two seasons ago, Beal was averaging 30 points per game for the second straight year. His scoring ability could create more opportunities for Wembanyama to excel. Beal’s veteran presence would also be valuable for younger players like Castle and the reigning Rookie of the Year, helping them sharpen their offensive games.
By the time the Spurs are ready to compete at a high level, Beal would likely be nearing the end of his prime, allowing San Antonio to free up a max contract slot. To make a potential trade more appealing, Phoenix could throw in a few second-round picks to enhance San Antonio’s draft assets.
### Why the Suns Would Be Interested
Aside from Wembanyama and Castle, most players on the Spurs roster are available, creating an opportunity for Phoenix. The Suns already have plenty of scoring with Durant and Booker but are missing the role players needed for a well-balanced team. A trade with San Antonio could address this gap.
Recently acquired Harrison Barnes could be a valuable addition for the Suns. Keldon Johnson is another strong target. Last season, Johnson’s role with the Spurs diminished, as his starts dropped from 63 to 27 games. Despite this, he remains a solid shooter with defensive potential—two attributes Phoenix desperately needs. To make the trade work financially, the Spurs might include Julian Champagnie as well.
