The Boston Red Sox are reportedly designating 1B/OF Dominic Smith for assignment, according to Robert Murray of FanSided. Smith, who previously played for the New York Mets and Washington Nationals, posted a slash line of .237/.317/.390/.706 over 83 games with the Red Sox in 2024. The decision to DFA Smith follows the news that first baseman Triston Casas is expected to return from injury on Friday against the Baltimore Orioles.
Smith signed with the Red Sox earlier in the 2024 season to provide first base depth after Casas suffered a rib injury early in the year. Casas has only appeared in 22 games this season but is now set to make his return, prompting Boston to part ways with Smith.
There was once a time when many believed Smith was destined for stardom in MLB. He showed flashes of potential early in his career, finishing 13th in MVP voting with a .993 OPS in 2020 while with the Mets. However, consistency has been a major issue for Smith, as he hasn’t been able to replicate those numbers since.
Despite the high expectations, Smith, now 29, has struggled to rediscover his form. Although the Red Sox provided him with a solid opportunity, Smith couldn’t capitalize. There’s still a chance for him to bounce back elsewhere, but Boston is moving forward with Casas back in the lineup.
