Ex-Cavalier Star Sharpshooter Shocks NBA with Retirement After Decade-Long Career

With the NBA offseason winding down and free agency nearly concluded, things have been relatively quiet in the league. However, the NBA still manages to deliver surprises. This time, it came in the form of an unexpected retirement announcement.

Veteran sharpshooter Joe Harris, who was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2014, officially announced his retirement on Thursday, as reported by Shams Charania of The Athletic.

Selected 33rd overall in the 2014 NBA Draft, Harris entered the league as a polished shooter from Virginia. Though he arrived with shooting skills, it took him a few seasons to fully adapt to the NBA.

During his rookie season, Harris played sparingly for a Cavaliers team that reached the NBA Finals in 2015. His sophomore year was derailed by a foot injury that required season-ending surgery, and he was traded to the Orlando Magic midseason. That same year, the Cavs would go on to win the NBA Championship, though Harris never returned to the Finals.

Despite this, Harris carved out a successful career as a reliable role player. His best years came with the Brooklyn Nets, where he averaged 11.6 points per game and shot an impressive 44% from three-point range over seven seasons. In 2019, he claimed victory in the NBA Three-Point Contest.

Harris’ sharpshooting earned him a four-year, $72 million contract in 2020. He wrapped up his career with the Detroit Pistons last season.
