The Atlanta Falcons have secured four-time Pro Bowl edge rusher Matthew Judon from the New England Patriots in exchange for a third-round draft pick. The deal, announced on Thursday, bolsters the Falcons’ pass-rushing capabilities, which have been lacking since Vic Beasley’s 15.5-sack season in 2016.
Judon, who turns 32 this week, has a notable track record, including 28 sacks in his first two years with the Patriots and a career-high 15.5 sacks in 2022. However, he struggled with injuries last season, managing only four sacks in four games. His availability came about due to a contract dispute, as he is seeking a new deal despite having a base salary of $6.5 million this season.
Before joining the Patriots, Judon played five seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, amassing 34.5 sacks and making two Pro Bowls. The Falcons, needing to enhance their pass rush following a season-ending knee injury to rookie edge rusher Bralen Trice, saw an opportunity in Judon. Trice, a third-round pick from the University of Washington, had been expected to be a key contributor after leading the nation in quarterback pressures over the past two seasons.
With Trice sidelined, Judon is poised to assume a critical pass-rushing role for the Falcons, aiming to make an immediate impact on their defense.
