Bears in Pursuit of Another Edge Rusher After Losing Pro Bowl Star to Falcons

When the Patriots traded Pro Bowl edge rusher Matt Judon to the Falcons on Wednesday, it marked the end of a significant trade option. Brad Spielberger and Jordan Schultz confirmed that the Chicago Bears were also pursuing Judon, but New England chose not to deal him to Chicago. Given that the defensive end position is a major weakness for the Bears heading into the 2024 season, Judon’s production and talent were undeniable. However, Bears general manager Ryan Poles decided against giving up a third-round pick for a 32-year-old coming off an injury who would require a contract extension.

Although Judon won’t be joining the Bears, they still have opportunities to enhance their pass rush before the season begins. Several potential players could be added to support Pro Bowler Montez Sweat, even if these additions may not provide a long-term solution.

**Haason Reddick, Trade**
If the Bears pursue a trade, Reddick appears to be their best chance at acquiring a star. The Jets, having traded for Reddick without securing a contract extension, face ongoing negotiations. Reddick, a two-time Pro Bowler with 50.5 sacks over the past four seasons, could be a strong addition if the Bears are willing to give up value similar to what they would have for Judon and offer him a lucrative deal.

**Yannick Ngakoue, Free Agent**
Ngakoue’s 2023 season was underwhelming with just 4.0 sacks and a 39.9 PFF grade, but his previous seasons were more productive. His familiarity with Matt Eberflus’ defensive scheme and potential for improvement could make him a viable, cost-effective option for the Bears.

**Shaq Lawson, Free Agent**
Lawson, who worked with Bears defensive coordinator Eric Washington in Buffalo, may be a solid, experienced addition. Although he had only one sack last year, his strength and experience could provide valuable depth alongside Austin Booker.

**Justin Houston, Free Agent**
At 35, Houston is not in his prime but remains a notable veteran with four Pro Bowl selections. Having previously worked under Eberflus with the Colts, Houston could offer experience and potential as a rotational player. His familiarity with the system and a chance to contribute might appeal to him as he nears the end of his career.
