Twins Place Scott Blewett on Waivers Following Recent Promotion

The Twins have announced the promotion of right-hander and top pitching prospect Zebby Matthews, a move that was anticipated yesterday. In a corresponding transaction, the team has designated right-hander Scott Blewett for assignment.

Blewett, 28, who signed a minor league contract with the Twins over the winter, was added to the major league roster last week. He made a single appearance for the Twins, pitching a perfect inning of relief with one strikeout. He has otherwise spent the season with Triple-A St. Paul, where he accumulated 51 2/3 innings with a 3.66 ERA, a 23.2% strikeout rate, a 7.6% walk rate, and a 40.6% ground-ball rate for the Saints.

A second-round pick by the Royals in 2014, Blewett has pitched a total of eight innings in the majors with Kansas City during the 2020-21 seasons. He has since moved through various teams, including the White Sox and Braves, and had a notable stint with the Uni-President Lions in Taiwan’s Chinese Professional Baseball League last year.

With his designation for assignment, Blewett will be placed on outright waivers in the coming days, making him available to all 29 other teams. Waiver priority is based on the MLB standings’ reverse order, not league-specific. If Blewett is not claimed, he can opt for free agency due to his previous outright assignments (most recently by the 2021 Royals).
