The Indianapolis Colts announced on Monday that they have claimed running back Demetric Felton off waivers from the Chicago Bears and, in a corresponding roster move, have waived injured running back Trent Pennix.

Felton, originally drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the 6th round of the 2021 NFL Draft, has also had stints with the Cincinnati Bengals (2023) and Chicago Bears (2024).
A former PFWA All-Rookie team member in 2021, Felton is best known for his debut season with Cleveland, where he led the team with 32 returns for 227 yards (7.1 average) and caught two touchdown passes, adding 18 receptions for 181 receiving yards.
Felton hasn’t played in an NFL game since 2022 with the Browns, where he recorded two receptions for 8 receiving yards and one carry for -4 rushing yards over 8 games (2 starts).
Pennix, unfortunately, suffered a groin injury in the second half of Sunday’s preseason loss to the Denver Broncos. Although the injury was minor, the Colts couldn’t afford to wait for his return due to their already thin backfield, especially after primary backup running back Trey Sermon sustained a potentially more serious hamstring injury.
Standing at 5’9” and weighing 190 pounds, Felton fits more into the role of a receiving, third-down back similar to Tyler Goodson, rather than a between-the-tackles runner.
We’ll see if Felton can make the most of this opportunity with the Colts, as he is likely to get significant carries in this Saturday’s preseason game, despite his limited familiarity with the Colts’ offense and playbook.
