The New York Knicks seek to add another center to fill the gap left by Isaiah Hartenstein’s free agency departure. Currently, Mitchell Robinson is set as the starting center, with Precious Achiuwa likely serving as a backup. However, the Knicks are interested in enhancing their depth and size at the position with their remaining roster spot.
Larry Nance Jr. and Robert Williams III have emerged as potential targets for the Knicks. According to The Athletic’s John Hollinger, the Knicks might consider Portland Trail Blazers center Robert Williams III or Atlanta Hawks big man Larry Nance Jr. before the season starts.
Hollinger noted that Williams III could be a good fit, but the Knicks may want to see if he can remain healthy for extended periods. Nance Jr., on the other hand, might be a more practical option due to his lower salary and current position as the third center for Atlanta. Nance, who was traded to the Hawks as part of the deal sending Dejounte Murray to the New Orleans Pelicans, averaged 5.7 points and 5.0 rebounds last season and could provide valuable depth and size to the Knicks’ second unit.
While Nance could be a solid addition, Williams’ injury history makes him a riskier choice. The 26-year-old has struggled with injuries, playing only 41 games over the past two seasons, including just six last season due to knee surgery. Despite his strong defensive skills, the Knicks might hesitate to trade for Williams due to his injury concerns.
Currently, there are no active discussions between the Knicks and either player, but as the offseason progresses, the team may explore these options to strengthen their center position.
