Breaking News: USC’s Rising Star to Miss 2024 Season Due to Critical Injury

USC’s fall camp started on a high note with positive updates, but things took a turn on Friday. Head coach Lincoln Riley announced that redshirt freshman Maliki Crawford will miss the entire season after sustaining an injury in practice earlier in the week. This is unfortunate news for Crawford, who had shown significant progress during the offseason.

Maliki Crawford, USC, Cornerback

Riley expressed his sympathy, saying, “Obviously, hate that for him. But we’ll get him rehabbed, fixed up, and ready for next season.”

Crawford, a 4-star recruit from the class of 2023, was ranked No. 171 overall and No. 17 among cornerbacks by 247Sports.com. The Oxnard, California native was the highest-ranked cornerback USC signed that year. However, he redshirted last season and will now have to wait another year to make his mark. He was expected to contribute as a backup this fall and work his way into the two-deep rotation.

Standing at 6-foot-4 and 180 pounds, Crawford’s size made him a promising prospect, and USC fans were eager to see his potential unfold. His absence is disappointing, especially for a program in need of defensive talent.

On a positive note, Riley also mentioned that the rest of the team is healthy, with no serious injuries reported. Some players have been sidelined with minor issues, but nothing significant.

Crawford had shown notable improvement during the offseason, particularly in USC’s spring game. While losing him for the season is a setback, especially for a defense in need of reinforcements, Crawford wasn’t expected to compete for a starting spot. Riley and his staff still have ample options at cornerback for the upcoming season.
