Breaking News: Kansas Lands Top Guard, Boosting Roster for Preseason No. 1 Contention

The Kansas Jayhawks have been widely regarded as a top-five team in college basketball for the upcoming season. With key returnees like Hunter Dickinson, KJ Adams, and Dajuan Harris, and a mix of high-profile transfers (Zeke Mayo, AJ Storr, Rylan Griffen) and a top-10 national recruiting class, their roster was already formidable.

However, their latest addition might solidify their position as the preseason No. 1 team. Former Northern Illinois guard David “Diggy” Coit, who committed to Kansas from the transfer portal, has bolstered one of the nation’s top guard rotations.

Coit, a 5-foot-11 guard from New Jersey, entered the transfer portal in April and initially caught Kansas’ interest. The Jayhawks’ coaching staff initially shifted focus to other prospects but re-engaged with Coit in July after he received his NCAA waiver. The commitment was finalized shortly after 247 Sports favored Kansas with a crystal ball prediction.

A two-time All-MAC Third Team selection, Coit began his college career at a JUCO before moving to Northern Illinois. In his junior season (2023-24), he averaged a career-high 20.8 points, 3.4 assists, 3.2 rebounds, and 0.9 steals, shooting 40.7% from the field, 33.7% from three-point range, and 88.5% from the free-throw line. He made 175 of 494 three-point attempts during his Division I career.

Kansas had a gap in guard depth after incoming sophomore Elmarko Jackson suffered a season-ending knee injury in June. Following this setback, former Mississippi State guard Shakeel Moore committed to Kansas, but he will now compete with Coit for backup point guard minutes.

Securing a 20-point-per-game scorer this late in the offseason is exceptional, and Jayhawk fans have come to trust that head coach Bill Self can achieve remarkable feats. This addition is sure to heighten anticipation for the 2024-25 season among Kansas basketball supporters.
