The San Antonio Spurs are set to sign 22-year-old wing Brandon Boston Jr., according to Michael Scotto from HoopsHype.
The Spurs and Boston Jr. have reached an agreement, with sources telling @hoopshype that the young guard will vie for a spot on the team. Over the past three seasons with the Los Angeles Clippers, Boston averaged 6.2 points in 12.9 minutes per game.
After the Clippers opted not to extend a qualifying offer, Boston became an unrestricted free agent. If the Clippers had made the offer, the Spurs could still sign him, but the Clippers would have had the chance to match the deal. Instead, Boston is now joining the Spurs on a training camp contract. With 15 roster spots already filled, the Spurs may offer him one of their remaining two-way contracts if he performs well.
Boston, selected as the 51st pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, was once a highly touted high school prospect, ranking among the top ten recruits from Sierra Canyon, where he played alongside notable figures like Bronny James and Onyeka Okongwu. Despite receiving numerous offers from elite programs, he chose Kentucky, known for producing NBA talent.
Although Boston had a promising start at Kentucky with averages of 11.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game, his shooting was inconsistent, hitting just 35.5% of his field goals and 30% of his three-point attempts.
Opting to enter the draft rather than return to Kentucky, Boston has shown potential in the NBA and G League. In the G League, he averaged 24.6 points per game with impressive shooting percentages. In the NBA, when given more playtime with the Clippers, he averaged 12.2 points per game with notable shooting splits in 20-29 minutes of play and 19.6 points per game in 30-39 minutes.
With his scoring ability, length, and defensive potential, Boston possesses significant NBA talent but needs to develop more consistency.
