After failing to secure Lauri Markkanen from the Utah Jazz, the Golden State Warriors might seem to be running out of trade options that could help them stand out in the competitive Western Conference and make another Finals run during Stephen Curry’s era.
Their understanding of their current roster’s limitations is what drove their aggressive pursuits of Markkanen and Paul George before both players ended up staying with their respective teams. These moves suggest that Curry and the Warriors may no longer be the top free-agent destination they once were in the mid to late 2010s.
However, this hasn’t deterred the Warriors from searching for a co-star to help Stephen Curry lead the team to another deep postseason run. They’ve already identified their latest trade target, and this rumor could be the move that finally materializes this offseason.
The Golden State Warriors Are Reportedly in Talks with the Chicago Bulls for Zach LaVine
According to FanSided’s Christopher Kline, the Warriors are officially linked to two-time All-Star Zach LaVine.
Kline noted that after Markkanen decided to stay in Utah, the Warriors shifted their focus to more realistic trade options, with LaVine fitting that category. While LaVine may not be as appealing as Markkanen, the Warriors may be forced to pursue him due to the circumstances.
Although LaVine’s contract is hefty, it could become less burdensome as the NBA’s new TV deal raises the salary cap. Additionally, the Bulls are reportedly eager to move LaVine, with the relationship between him and the team having deteriorated beyond repair. The Warriors could potentially resolve that situation and gain additional assets in the process.
LaVine had a down season by his standards, playing only 25 games and averaging 19.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game. There are also concerns about his attitude during his time as Chicago’s star player.
Despite these red flags, LaVine remains a talented player who Steve Kerr could mold to fit the Warriors’ system. The real question is how much the Warriors will have to give up to acquire him before the Bulls decide to move on.
