Liam Cooper has become a target for Watford this summer following his release from Leeds United at the end of last season, after almost a decade with the Yorkshire club.
Tom Cleverley has expressed interest in signing the centre-back, who made 284 appearances for Leeds. According to Leeds Live, Watford is among several teams considering Cooper, who is now eagerly awaiting a move as the new Championship season approaches.
Blackburn Rovers were the closest to securing the 32-year-old’s services, but manager John Eustace noted in late July that negotiations had stalled.
Watford, coming off a disappointing 2023/24 season with their worst Championship finish since 2009/10, will be seeking players with significant second-tier experience.
Cooper, who made just 15 league appearances for Leeds last season—his fewest since joining from Chesterfield in August 2014—had limited playtime due to a foot injury and strong performances from teammates Joe Rodon and Ethan Ampadu. Despite this, he remains a capable player and could be a valuable addition for Watford if an agreement is reached.
According to Watford fan pundit Justin Beattie, while the club may not attract high-profile signings anymore, Cooper would be a strong option for a free transfer. He remarked, “We know Liam Cooper has performed well at Leeds, and although we’re not in a position to make big-name signings, we could do much worse than him.”
In related news, former Leicester City player Leicester City has criticized Watford fans for recent comments. Additionally, Watford’s interest in Cooper may be influenced by the uncertainty surrounding Wesley Hoedt’s future. Hoedt, who has been linked with a move to Trabzonspor, is now facing doubts due to a knee injury sustained during a pre-season friendly.
James suggests that while Hoedt’s potential transfer might be in jeopardy, Cooper could still be a valuable addition for Watford: “It seems this move could be a direct replacement for Hoedt, but with his injury, Cooper looks like a promising fit for Watford.”
