Mavericks’ Signing of 7-Foot-5 Giant Increases Pressure on Veteran Player

August is typically the slowest period of the NBA offseason, with free agency winding down and training camp still a couple of months away. This August may pass more quickly due to the ongoing Olympics, but the Dallas Mavericks have recently made moves that have sparked excitement among fans.

One notable move was the signing of Spencer Dinwiddie, which was a relatively under-the-radar acquisition. However, the Mavericks made another significant signing a few days ago that might have a bigger impact than expected.

The recent addition of Jamarion Sharp, a 7-foot-5 center, could intensify the pressure on veteran Dwight Powell to perform well. Although Sharp is likely to spend most of the season with the Texas Legends in the G League rather than making the 15-man roster, his presence heightens the stakes for Powell.

Powell, who was once a starting center, found himself lower in the depth chart last season after the Mavericks acquired Daniel Gafford. By the end of the season, Powell was fourth on the depth chart behind Dereck Lively II, Gafford, and Maxi Kleber, which is notable given his $4 million annual salary.

Sharp, known for his exceptional shot-blocking and potential as a defensive anchor, may force Powell to up his game. Sharp’s impressive college stats include 3.7 blocks per game, and he significantly alters opponents’ offensive strategies. While his scoring abilities are still developing, Sharp’s ability to generate second-chance opportunities and his offensive rebounding are strong points.

Sharp, who participated in the Mavericks’ Summer League, could earn a two-way contract if he performs well in training camp. This would add more pressure on Powell, as Sharp’s limited opportunities to showcase his skills against NBA competition could further threaten Powell’s position.

Although Sharp is expected to spend most of the upcoming season with the Legends, he could be a future asset for the Mavericks. With Powell aging and his performance potentially declining, Sharp might be groomed to join the Mavericks’ main roster in the future. The development of Sharp is a storyline to watch closely next season, as it could impact the team’s center position significantly.
