According to Hull Live, Cardiff City have reached an agreement with Premier League champions Manchester City to sign 21-year-old Alex Robertson.
Robertson spent the previous season on loan at Portsmouth, where he played a key role in their promotion to the Championship. He made 23 appearances in League One, including 20 starts, scoring one goal and providing four assists before a serious hamstring injury in January ended his season early.
Since returning to Manchester City, Robertson has been the subject of speculation about his future, as he has struggled to secure a place in Pep Guardiola’s first team.
Cardiff City have now secured a deal to bring Robertson to their squad for the upcoming Championship season. Despite interest from other second division teams, including Portsmouth and Hull City, Cardiff has emerged as the front-runner.
Portsmouth manager John Mousinho had recently expressed hopes of bringing Robertson back to Fratton Park, but it appears they will miss out on this opportunity, which could impact their preparations for the Championship.
Hull City had also shown interest in Robertson as they aim to build a promotion-contending team, but Cardiff’s agreement with Manchester City gives them a significant advantage.
This addition is expected to be a major boost for Cardiff manager Erol Bulut as he prepares for the new season. Cardiff, who finished 12th last season under Bulut’s first term, have already strengthened their squad with the signings of Calum Chambers, Anwar El Ghazi, Chris Willock, and Wilfried Kanga on loan from Hertha Berlin.
Cardiff City will start their new campaign with a home game against Sunderland on August 10 and will be aiming to challenge for promotion to the Premier League.
Robertson’s strong performance in League One last season and his potential make this signing a significant win for Cardiff, offering a chance for long-term development and impact within the club.
