Sam Gallagher’s debut for Stoke City was cut short after just 28 minutes. The 28-year-old, who recently transferred from Blackburn for an undisclosed fee, was included in the starting lineup by manager Steven Schumacher for the final pre-season match against AZ Alkmaar at the bet365 Stadium.
Gallagher began the game energetically, pressing AZ Alkmaar’s defense, though he received limited service. He had a few chances to make runs and hold up the ball, but didn’t have any clear-cut opportunities. At 6’4″, Gallagher certainly made his presence felt.
Unfortunately, Gallagher’s game ended abruptly when he went down holding his right calf. The medical staff attended to him briefly before he hobbled off the field and was substituted by Niall Ennis.
During the first half, Stoke City managed to hold their own against AZ Alkmaar, with Million Manhoef posing a significant threat on the right wing. Manhoef had Stoke’s best opportunity just before halftime, but his shot from a long ball was straight at the goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet.
Stoke City, having won four of their five pre-season games, will face Coventry City in their Championship opener next Saturday.
