After losing Josh Hader to free agency over the winter, the San Diego Padres have made a significant move to bolster their bullpen. According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Padres are finalizing a trade with the Miami Marlins to acquire left-handed reliever Tanner Scott. Joining Scott in the trade is right-handed pitcher Bryan Hoeing, while San Diego will send pitchers Robby Snelling (LHP) and Adam Mazur (RHP) to Miami, along with infield prospects Graham Pauley and Jay Beshears.
Scott, 30, has been one of the most sought-after relievers this season. He was named an All-Star for the first time, boasting an impressive 1.18 ERA, 53 strikeouts, and 18 saves in 20 opportunities for the Marlins. Although he will be a free agent after this year, his outstanding performance has made him a valuable asset for MLB contenders.
The Padres, currently 57-51, already feature one of the strongest bullpens in baseball. All-Star closer Robert Suarez, Adrian Morejon with a career-low 2.74 ERA, Jeremiah Estrada with 14.9 strikeouts per nine innings, and Jason Adam—acquired in a recent trade and sporting a 2.30 ERA over the last three seasons—are all part of the Padres’ formidable relief corps. With Scott now added to this elite group, the Padres aim to solidify their position in the NL wild-card race.
