Gold Coast SUNS midfielder and dual-premiership player Brandon Ellis has announced his retirement from AFL football after a distinguished career spanning 251 matches.
In a team meeting this morning, Ellis shared his decision with his teammates, reflecting on his 13-year journey in the AFL with pride.
“I’m incredibly honored to have experienced such a remarkable journey in the AFL and to have met so many amazing people who will be part of my life forever,” Ellis said.
“I’m grateful to the Richmond Football Club for giving me the chance to fulfill my dream and change my life.
“To my Gold Coast SUNS family, moving here has been a wonderful adventure, and we consider Gold Coast our home now. It was the best decision we could have made, and we don’t plan on leaving anytime soon.
“Thank you to Dimma for your immense impact on my life from start to finish. I can truly say that I’m a better person because of you.
“To my family and partner Sarah – your unwavering support has been crucial in allowing me to live my dream. I am forever indebted to you.”
Drafted by Richmond in 2011, Ellis played eight seasons with the Tigers from 2012 to 2019 before joining Gold Coast in 2020. During his five seasons with the SUNS, Ellis played 75 games, including his 250th match earlier this season.
Ellis enjoyed significant success with Richmond, winning two premierships in 2017 and 2019 under coach Damien Hardwick.
GC SUNS General Manager of Football Wayne Campbell praised Ellis’s impact on the club.

“Attracting a player of Brandon’s caliber with premiership experience was a major achievement for our club, and we’re grateful for his contributions over the past five years.
“Brandon will be remembered for his infectious personality, game sense, and crucial goals. He retires as a champion of two clubs, and we wish him and Sarah all the best for the future.”
Ellis’s retirement is effective immediately, meaning he will not play again in the AFL or VFL this season.
