The Cleveland Cavaliers are looking to enhance their wing depth, and Dorian Finney-Smith could be a key addition. According to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto, the Cavaliers might explore acquiring Finney-Smith, with restricted free agent Isaac Okoro potentially being part of a sign-and-trade deal.
Scotto reported that while the Brooklyn Nets are considered a possible destination for Okoro, no imminent trade with them is expected. The Nets have shown interest in Finney-Smith, who has been linked to the Cavaliers in trade discussions involving Okoro.
Finney-Smith is known for his strong two-way play on the perimeter, boasting a career 35.5% shooting from three-point range. As the Nets enter a rebuilding phase after trading Mikal Bridges to the New York Knicks, they might consider dealing Finney-Smith, who is 31 years old, in favor of building through the draft. The Cavaliers could offer young talent in exchange for Finney-Smith and Okoro, given that Okoro is only 23.
This is not the first time the Cavaliers have shown interest in Finney-Smith. Earlier reports from July 5 mentioned that both the Philadelphia 76ers and Cavaliers were eyeing him. The Cavaliers have been monitoring Finney-Smith’s performance since he joined the Nets.
With Okoro remaining a restricted free agent in a tight market, a sign-and-trade could benefit both parties. It would allow the Cavaliers to bolster their wing depth while giving Okoro the opportunity to secure a better contract with a team that values his potential.
Finney-Smith is set to enter the third year of his four-year, $55.6 million deal, with a player option for the 2025-26 season worth $15.4 million. Should the Cavaliers acquire him and have a successful season, there’s a possibility he might opt out for a longer-term contract.
Adding Finney-Smith would address a key area of need for the Cavaliers, enhancing their wing depth and perimeter defense. Since acquiring Donovan Mitchell in 2022 and adding shooters like Max Strus and Georges Niang, the Cavaliers have strengthened their roster. Finney-Smith could further solidify their playoff aspirations and make them a more formidable team.
