Terry McLean, a former coach at Elk River and a member of the Minnesota High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame, passed away on July 12 at the age of 83.
McLean coached at Elk River for 22 years, leading the team to three conference titles, five section titles, and one Prep Bowl appearance. His tenure saw the Elks make consecutive state playoff appearances in 1989, 1990, 1991, and 1992. In the 1990 Class 2A championship game, Elk River narrowly lost to Anoka with a score of 19-14.
Starting his coaching career in Ogilvie, Minnesota, McLean accumulated a career record of 190-107-2. His remarkable achievements earned him induction into the Football Coaches Hall of Fame in 2005.
McLean was a notable athlete at St. Michael Catholic High School, excelling in three sports. He continued his athletic career at the University of Minnesota, where he was a member of the Gophers football team for two years before graduating from St. Cloud State University, where he also lettered in baseball.
In addition to his coaching career, McLean co-founded a golf competition called the Minnesota to the Mournes (Cider Cup) in 2002. This biennial event alternates between Northern Ireland and Minnesota, fostering a unique connection between the two regions.
McLean is survived by his wife of 63 years, Joan, as well as a daughter, a son, and four grandchildren. His legacy in Minnesota high school football and his contributions to the community will be remembered by many.
