Kane Cornes has criticized Collingwood for letting go of premiership forward Jack Ginnivan, who has excelled at Hawthorn. In Round 19, Hawthorn defeated Collingwood by 66 points, with Ginnivan achieving a career-high 31 disposals and scoring two goals.
Initially, it seemed Collingwood had benefited from the trade that saw Ginnivan leave shortly after their 2023 premiership win. However, months later, the situation has changed significantly.
While Collingwood struggles to stay in the top eight to defend their premiership, Hawthorn is thriving, having won nine of their last eleven matches and sitting just one and a half games outside the top eight. Ginnivan has been pivotal in this resurgence, enjoying newfound freedom at Hawthorn.
In a May interview on SEN Radio, Ginnivan contrasted the rigid system at Collingwood with the more flexible approach at Hawthorn, where he feels he can better express himself as a forward.
Cornes highlighted Ginnivan’s improved performance and motivation at Hawthorn, where he now averages 21.2 disposals, 1.3 goals, and 7.5 score involvements per game. Cornes criticized Collingwood for giving up on Ginnivan, drawing comparisons to other players who overcame early career challenges to succeed at their clubs.
Currently, Collingwood sits 13th on the ladder, having won only one of their last four games.
