D’Margio Wright-Phillips is set to join Beerschot on a permanent basis after aiding the club’s promotion to the Belgian top flight during his loan spell in the latter part of last season.
The 22-year-old forward, son of Shaun Wright-Phillips and grandson of Ian Wright, is ending his three-and-a-half-year stint with Stoke City, having initially joined from the Manchester City academy.
Michael O’Neill gave him a taste of first-team action at Stoke, but he fell down the pecking order under Alex Neil and was loaned to Northampton Town in 2023 before joining Beerschot in February. There, he reunited with Stoke youth graduate Thibaud Verlinden under manager Dirk Kuyt, contributing four goals to help secure the Challenger Pro League title.
Beerschot are now working to secure a work permit for Wright-Phillips, who commented, “I felt very good here and was able to show my worth again. That’s why I wanted to stay and take a step higher together. I am sure I can still learn a lot here and grow as a player and person.”
Beerschot’s season begins on Saturday, July 27, against OH Leuven. Dirk Kuyt, the former Liverpool forward and current Beerschot manager, said, “We are happy to have permanently committed D’Margio to us. He proved his worth last season and scored crucial goals in our title race. He can play in multiple positions and strengthens our core. We look forward to growing with him to the next level.”
