Another day brings yet another baseless rumor about the NY Jets potentially trading for Davante Adams. The Jets have been linked to Adams trade rumors for over a year now, but recently, these rumors have gained more traction.
From Aaron Rodgers’ persistent efforts to recruit his former teammate to comments made by both Adams and Rodgers, the idea of a Packers reunion in Florham Park has become a major summer talking point for the Jets.
On Monday, WFAN’s Boomer Esiason added fuel to the fire with his own supposed report. The former NFL quarterback claims that if an Adams trade happens—and he seems to think it’s likely—he knows when it would occur.
Esiason reports that an Adams trade would probably take place in late August or early September, just before the 2024 season begins. That’s very soon.
“The dead cap for the Raiders this year is $40 million [if they traded Adams]. I’m hearing that this is going to happen – if it does happen – in late August or early September. And the cap hit for him is $25 million.” – Boomer Esiason
However, Jets fans shouldn’t get too excited about this latest Davante Adams trade report. We need to address the obvious issue here: this is a Boomer Esiason report. The former Jets QB doesn’t have the most reliable track record for accurate reporting.
This is the same person who reported that Ben Johnson was a “lock” to become the Washington Commanders’ head coach just a few months ago. He also confidently claimed that the same team would be renamed the “Washington Admirals” a few years back.
Esiason also previously reported that the Jets planned to release Mekhi Becton before the 2022 season, among many other inaccurate “reports.” His track record is spotty at best.
That’s why it’s hard to trust his latest rumors. While an Adams trade remains a dream for the Jets, it’s difficult to imagine any deal happening before the season starts, both for logistical and financial reasons.
If the Las Vegas Raiders were going to trade Adams in the offseason, it would have happened by now. The Jets reportedly reached out about an Adams trade before last year’s deadline and were denied.
Raiders general manager Tom Telesco recently confirmed to reporters that the team has no intention of trading Adams before the season starts. Trading him would result in a large dead cap hit, and it’s hard to imagine they’d get equal value in return.
If the Jets are going to trade for Adams at any point, it’s more likely to happen at the trade deadline (if the Raiders are out of contention) or in the offseason. A pre-Week 1 trade doesn’t make much sense.
The Davante Adams rumors continue to swirl, but Jets fans probably shouldn’t put too much stock into this one.
