As anticipated, Yukinari Sugawara has officially joined Southampton from AZ Alkmaar on a four-year deal. After spending five years in the Netherlands and appearing in nearly 200 matches, Sugawara has made the move to the Saints, confirmed by the club on their official website.
Primarily a right-back, Sugawara is known for his ability to advance forward, score, and create goals, but he can also play as a central defender in a back three.
Sugawara expressed his excitement: “Playing in the Premier League has been a dream since I was young. When Southampton made an offer, I accepted immediately. I admired their smart, short-passing style when I faced them in pre-season.”
Southampton manager Russell Martin praised Sugawara: “Yuki has been our top target. He brings a wealth of European experience, a great mentality, and a character we believe will be popular with his teammates. His enthusiasm and determination to succeed are clear.”
While Sugawara’s market value is estimated at £12-15 million, Southampton reportedly paid less due to his contract nearing its end. Despite his extensive experience in European football, stepping up to the Premier League is a significant challenge, but the club is confident in his ability to make the transition.
