2023 Season Highlights and the Future for Tuli Tuipulotu
Throughout the 2023 season, the Los Angeles Chargers heavily relied on their second-round pick, Tuli Tuipulotu. The 20-year-old USC alumnus was a crucial component in maintaining the Chargers’ defensive line amidst numerous challenges. Despite his standout rookie season, which had him in contention for Defensive Rookie of the Year, Tuipulotu is unlikely to start on the Chargers’ defensive line in 2024.

Tuipulotu was instrumental in preventing the Chargers’ defensive line from faltering completely. The anticipated dominance of starters Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa was short-lived due to Bosa’s various injuries, culminating in a season-ending foot injury in week 11. Even when Bosa played, Tuipulotu, as the next option at EDGE, showcased his potential in limited snaps and was dominant when given the chance to start. His standout performance came against the Minnesota Vikings, earning him notable stats: 8 sacks, 51 pressures, and a 71.0 defensive grade from PFF. His 88.4 run defense grade was the highest among rookie edge rushers, significantly outpacing his peers. This impressive start positioned him as a strong candidate for Defensive Rookie of the Year, but by the season’s end, the votes favored other rookies due to the Chargers’ overall struggles.
**Why Tuipulotu Won’t Start in 2024**
Despite his bright spot on a struggling defense, Tuipulotu won’t start in 2024 due to the return of a healthy Joey Bosa. Bosa’s experience and pass-rushing skill are crucial for the team, especially given the state of the Chargers’ defensive backfield. Bosa, alongside Khalil Mack, who had one of his best seasons, forms a formidable duo expected to start. Tuipulotu will likely be a high-end rotational rusher to aid his development and benefit the team, under the guidance of Defensive Coordinator Jesse Minter. Additionally, the arrival of Bud Dupree will reduce Tuipulotu’s snaps compared to 2023, barring injuries. Though not an immediate starter, Tuipulotu’s impact and presence will still be significant in the 2024 season.
