Recruiting is always unpredictable, and Friday highlighted this when top-100 wide receiver Derek Meadows, a five-star prospect per 247 Sports and a key target for Michigan football, decided to postpone his commitment by a week, according to a new report.
Standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 200 pounds, Meadows hails from Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas and is a highly sought-after wideout. Alongside Michigan, LSU, Alabama, and Notre Dame are also vying for his commitment. Initially, it was widely expected that Meadows would choose LSU on Friday. However, his decision to delay might benefit Michigan or Notre Dame.
Meadows’ recruitment has been challenging to predict, with LSU being the favorite before the delay. Typically, a postponement isn’t advantageous for the frontrunner, although Michigan did secure Andrew Olesh’s commitment after a similar delay.
Notre Dame is currently the frontrunner, with the On3 prediction machine giving them an 83 percent chance. Nevertheless, Michigan also stands to gain from the extra time to recruit Meadows, who visited Ann Arbor officially.
While Notre Dame and LSU remain the likely choices, Michigan has recently outmaneuvered both schools in recruiting battles, so it’s not out of the question. Michigan also leads for another top-100 wideout, Andrew Marsh. Though the Wolverines haven’t been traditionally strong in recruiting wide receivers, they’ve secured solid prospects in recent years.
Securing either Meadows or Marsh, or potentially both, would be a significant achievement for Michigan’s recruiting, particularly for coach Sherrone Moore.
