In an anticipated move, the Sixers will re-sign forward KJ Martin, a source confirms to Liberty Ballers. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski initially reported the deal, specifying that it is for two years and $16 million.
It was widely expected throughout the offseason that Martin would return to the Sixers. Bryan Toporek suggested that the Sixers might offer Martin a “balloon deal” using his Bird Rights to exceed the salary cap. While the deal is somewhat above market value for Martin, it aligns with the Sixers’ strategy to use it more for trading for a role player rather than a star. Details of the contract structure and its implications will be provided as they become available.
Meanwhile, Martin is expected to be a valuable asset for the Sixers. Acquired in the trade that sent James Harden to the LA Clippers, Martin’s playing time was inconsistent. However, by the end of the regular season, head coach Nick Nurse found innovative ways to utilize Martin, including playing him as a small-ball five. Given the current roster’s lack of true fours or small-ball fives, Martin should find playing time in some capacity.
Martin, 23, is the son of former NBA veteran Kenyon Martin. The younger Martin spent his first three NBA seasons with the Houston Rockets before being traded to LA. He brings size, athleticism, and toughness to the forward position for the Sixers.
