The Cleveland Cavaliers have opted not to extend a qualifying offer to power forward Isaiah Mobley, making him an unrestricted free agent, according to reports and Hoops Wire sources.
Mobley, 24, stands 6-foot-8 and was picked by the Cavs as the No. 49 overall selection in the 2022 NBA Draft from USC. Over his two seasons, he has played in 22 NBA games, averaging 2.5 points and 1.4 rebounds.
Isaiah Mobley, the older brother of Cavaliers starter Evan Mobley, had signed two-way contracts in the previous two summers. However, this summer, he did not receive such a contract and will not participate in the Cavs’ summer league roster.
It appears likely that the Cavs are moving on from Mobley, although he could still join the Canton Charge and potentially make his way back to an NBA roster. For now, Mobley is free to explore other opportunities.
“I know my time is coming,” Mobley said at the end of last season, according to Jackson Flickinger of SB Nation. “I just try to keep getting better and be ready for my opportunities when they come. But yeah, I want it to be now or tomorrow. But you know, that’s out of my control. I don’t let it really bother me.”
With or without Isaiah Mobley, the Cavs could use additional frontcourt help. They are expected to part ways with Tristan Thompson and Damian Jones, leaving Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley as their primary big men.
