On Monday, the speculation surrounding the future of top safety prospect Ivan Taylor ended as the Florida native switched his commitment from the Fighting Irish to the Michigan Wolverines.
Taylor, who had committed to Notre Dame in December, began to reconsider his decision in February after safeties coach Chris O’Leary left the program. Despite a reassuring unofficial visit in the spring, Taylor’s uncertainty resurfaced when he announced official visits to Alabama and Michigan, in addition to Notre Dame. Florida also showed interest, although a visit never occurred.
After visiting Notre Dame, Taylor headed to Ann Arbor, which reignited concerns among the Irish fanbase. This week, Taylor’s decision to commit to Michigan was confirmed, dealing a significant blow to Notre Dame’s recruitment efforts. Taylor was the second highest-rated recruit in Notre Dame’s class and one of just four Top 100 commits.
His de-commitment leaves a gap in Notre Dame’s safety competition, prompting the team to explore the high school and transfer portal options before the 2025 season. The Irish still have JaDon Blair and Ethan Long committed for 2025, with athlete Jerome Bettis Jr. and Top 100 corner prospect Dallas Golden potentially fitting into the safety role.
Another key recruit, four-star athlete Dylan Robinson, is expected to announce his commitment soon, with Notre Dame and UCLA as the primary contenders. The Irish may also consider Vanderbilt baseball commit Brandon Logan as a potential late addition to their football program.
Notre Dame’s staff is likely to evaluate further transfer portal options, considering the current depth and recent successful transfers like Rod Heard III from Northwestern. The Irish have a solid defensive backs class, but if a suitable talent emerges, they might make additional moves to strengthen their roster.
