Sydney forward Logan McDonald has turned down interest from his home state and reigning premiers Collingwood to sign a four-year contract extension with the Swans.
McDonald had long been rumored to return to Western Australia, with Fremantle holding three first-round picks for next year’s draft.
However, the new four-year deal with Sydney, announced by the club on Friday, will keep him with the Swans until he becomes a free agent.
The key forward was often considered a potential asset to bolster Fremantle’s offensive lineup, before the rise of players Josh Treacy and Jye Amiss, and the Dockers were expected to make a significant move for the Perth Football Club product.
Collingwood showed interest this season, with The Herald Sun reporting that the Magpies hoped to leverage a forthcoming rule change allowing clubs to trade draft picks two seasons ahead.
McDonald was in the spotlight during Fremantle’s dramatic win over the Swans at the SCG on Saturday, missing a post-siren kick that would have given his team the lead for the first time in the game.
“I’m absolutely thrilled to stay here in the red and white, this place feels like my second home,” McDonald said.
“I’ve been here for four years now and I’m excited to stay for another four. My teammates are my best friends and the people I live with and see every day are my second family. With the promising position our list is in right now, I just want to compete to win games and hopefully secure some premierships.”
This news follows fellow West Australian Jedd Busslinger’s commitment to a two-year deal with the Western Bulldogs. The second-year key defender has yet to debut under Luke Beveridge.
