All-Star shortstop Tim Anderson’s tenure with the Miami Marlins is ending disappointingly after the team designated him for assignment on Tuesday.
In a corresponding move, the Marlins promoted rookie Xavier Edwards from their Triple-A affiliate, the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp. Edwards hit .330 with one home run and six RBIs in the minors this season.

“It’s never an easy day when you have to DFA one of your everyday players,” Marlins manager Skip Schumaker said about Anderson. “Tim was awesome in the clubhouse. I didn’t know him before this year, and he was one of the hardest workers I’ve ever been around.”
Anderson became a free agent last winter after the Chicago White Sox declined a $14 million club option on his contract. He remained on the free-agent market longer than expected before signing a one-year, $5 million deal with the Marlins in February.
At the time, both sides anticipated the former AL batting champion would have a bounce-back season in Miami. However, that never happened. Anderson struggled in his 65 games with the Marlins, hitting a career-low .214 with no home runs and just nine RBIs.
Before joining the Marlins, Anderson spent all eight of his MLB seasons with the White Sox. He earned two All-Star selections and won a Silver Slugger Award in 2020 during his time in Chicago.
