The Los Angeles Rams have announced that they’ve re-signed safety John Johnson, marking his third tenure with the team.

Johnson, originally drafted by the Rams in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft, is coming back to LA after spending time with the Cleveland Browns and then returning to the Rams last season. His deep understanding of the Rams’ defensive schemes and leadership experience should complement veteran Kamren Curl in the secondary under the guidance of new defensive coordinator Chris Shula.
It’s still unclear what specific role Johnson will take on this season. Kamren Curl is likely to secure one of the two starting safety positions, while Quentin Lake is expected to shift from slot cornerback to safety and vie for a starting role. Additionally, third-round draft pick Kamren Kinchens might also be in the mix for significant playing time. Russ Yeast, who started frequently early last season before Johnson took over, is expected to play the “star” cornerback position in the defense.
In essence, Johnson’s return doesn’t guarantee him a starting spot—he will need to compete with Lake and Kinchens for playing time. However, his veteran presence will be a crucial asset for depth and as a potential backup in case of injury.
