The Melbourne Storm lead the NRL competition by four points and are strategically cautious with players returning from injury or dealing with minor issues.
The club has confirmed that Harry Grant and Nick Meaney will miss this weekend’s game for different reasons. Grant is being rested due to “bumps and bruises,” while Meaney, recovering from a calf injury, is given an extra week of recovery since Melbourne has a bye next weekend.
Frank Ponissi, the club’s general manager of football, explained the decisions, emphasizing the importance of player health and readiness for the latter part of the season. Grant, who has played extensively this year, will benefit from the break to recover from two tough Origin matches. Meaney’s calf injury, being a soft tissue issue, required additional precaution.
Cameron Munster is also not being rushed back from his groin injury, with the club confirming his steady progress. He might be available for selection by Round 21 or Round 22.
However, Xavier Coates will miss six to eight weeks due to an injury sustained during the recent win over the Canberra Raiders. The club is taking a cautious approach to ensure his full recovery before the finals.
Jack Howarth is ready to play after not finishing the last game against the Raiders, and Ryan Papenhuyzen will participate if he gets through training. Alec Macdonald and Tepai Moeroa have returned to play for the North Sydney Bears in the NSW Cup, adding to the Storm’s forward depth. Outside backs Young Tonumaipea and Marion Seve, along with young forward Tristan Powell, are still a few weeks away from returning.
