The Mets have made several roster adjustments over the past week to manage their bullpen amidst Edwin Díaz’s suspension and multiple injuries, and they’ve made another change. The team announced they had optioned Tyler Jay—who nearly blew the game in extra innings last night—and replaced him with José Buttó, who returns to the majors after a month and a half in Triple-A.
Before being sent down in May, Buttó made seven starts for the Mets this year, posting a 3.08 ERA in 38 innings with a strikeout per inning, though he struggled with control, walking too many batters (BB/9 of 5). His performance in the minors is similar, with a 3.05 ERA in 44.1 innings over eight starts in Syracuse, and both lower walk and strikeout rates. Currently, Buttó is expected to pitch out of the bullpen while remaining stretched out enough to be an option for starting later. For now, he aims to bring some stability to a much-needed relief corps.
